Day 330

Randolph County Conservation Lake

When opportunity knocks, I make the most of the offer-at-hand.
My first “real” job in the vast marketplace of industry provided me with a company car and the advantage of working “on my own time”. I could come and go as I pleased and as long as my work product satisfied the “powers that be”, I was left alone to my own devices. Fantastic!
Being well-organized and precisely efficient this forebode “Good” things for me personally.
For years I thought I worked for money; then, one fine day, we put $17,900 in the bank, after taxes and expenses (more money than I earned in a year for several years) and the next month I got my “huge” commission check for a measly $12.50; I had closed all my sales the prior month (and, I can be like French bread---one long loaf…on occasion). Neither month changed anything.
A “light bulb” went off with that distinct dichotomy of funds available: I did not work for “money”; I worked for the imitable (and, elusive) prize of Freedom!---and…I found it.
Being on my own time without direct supervision (I worked out of my home for many years) I found to me to do the things best suited to a “practicing-bum” like golf, writing, horses, photography, farming, construction, real estate, and my very favorite pursuit: Faith! Family! Freedom! I made a career of “Having a great life:! And---surprise…once I quit chasing that elusive dollar (believe it or not), the money began to chase Me! I reckon that’s true enough.
I eschew “worry & fear”---refuse to indulge the evil twin step-sisters…I just enjoy life!
So? On one of my frequent dalliances on a beautiful afternoon in the quaint little town of Chester, Illinois, I found myself between appointments. Grabbing a burger and a Coke, I trekked on over to the Randolph Conservation Lake area located about three miles north of town. The state had purchased 1100 acres and dammed off a 30 acre lake with hiking and horse trails in a fantastic topography for the enjoyment of the public; I even fished there a couple of times.
We picnicked on the property as a family and Lady Candice and I still make day-trips to the location; often we get a chicken dinner at the local grocery store and share the treat in our little secluded hide-away yonder by the levee which contains the lake; our favorite time is the fall leaves reflecting on the dancing diamond surface, a sight to behold; such a very spectacular area.
We have continued the odyssey and tradition taking our grandchildren to the venue for fun.
Such wondrous serendipity-finds add depth-of-appreciation to the experience of life. Amen!

Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Freedom-calls” Memories!
