Day 337
Taking turns
cranking to make homemade ice cream
The
“simple” things make life---Fabulous!
Often, those “easy-living” traits are Sweet!
I
have always been exceedingly “Blessed”! Luck-of-the-draw! Winner of the
Life-lottery!
I
came from 2-exemplar families, both sides. Tremendous people! Good! Generous! Loving!
My
great Grandparents’ back porch at the farm was a gathering place for the
extended family; we spent a great deal of time there over the years. As a kid,
I enjoyed listening to the adults discuss everything from politics to religion
and talk about family members and the experiences of life they had witnessed;
as a child with an interest in history, that was a great teaching-time.
Somehow,
the family always managed to make the events of the day a great adventure.
Homemade
ice cream might be an anomaly to the “hip” modern of today, that experience
offered some valuable insight to character, generosity and “collective”-effort.
The
collaborative-effort of each member of the gathered assemblage kept the
crank-handle churning the cream mixture in the stainless steel canister
centered in the wooden bucket filled with ice shard covered with rock salt
which made it melt freezing the mixture in the maker. In about an hour and a
half---Voila…frozen homemade ice
cream. In season we added fresh peaches or strawberries to the cream concoction
which added a special delight to the tasty treat.
That
old crank got plenty hard to turn and towards the end of the freezing cycle,
even the most-muscled man had difficulty making one, or, even, two revolutions
before relenting.
Once
spooned into glass bowls with a portion for each participant, one had to be
very quick about eating the frozen delicacy as it tended to melt rather
quickly. Mmm’ Mmm’ Good!
Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Frozen-delight!” Memories!
