Day 288

“Osterhage”, Gummersheimer”---funny German names
to our Southern relatives…especially Jimmy Lee

When one travels outside their own country, one expects “variations” on word-sounds; within the borders of the “home” state, such anomalies seem somehow---strange!
My maternal ancestors hail from the great state of Tennessee , the southern region of our country. When we visited there, 3 – 4 times a year, it took me a day or two to acclimate my hearing to the not-so-subtle inflexions and accents of my relatives; they shared in the dilemma.
My Uncle brought his family to celebrate Thanksgiving with us in the northern country one year. Young cousin Jimmy Lee had a “hoot” over the etymology of some of the German names.
Osterhage! Gummersheimer! And, many of the other sur-titles sent Jim-bo into laughter.
We had a good time with the discovery; a good sense of humor goes a long way. Bravo!
