Day 166

Becky, Alex, Z. Tyler, Dad & Mom take a trip

to Colorado & drive through the night on the way

home because there were NO motel rooms

available anywhere in the state of Kansas.

“No room at the Inn!” Brother! I know just how they felt---frustrated, and…defeated!

I reckon things are slow in the great state of Kansas; on our way home in August, all the rooms in the state were rented; the state fair was in progress and the whole state was attending!

We had a beautiful trip to the colorful state of Colorado; made all the stops and showed our “guest”, Alex, our favorite haunts in the Rockies: Colorado Springs, Garden-of-the-gods park, Pikes Peak, Cripple Creek, Divide, Breckenridge, Hoosier’s Pass, Frisco, the Blue River, Granby, Rocky Mountain National Park from the south entrance, the summit, Estes Park, a ball game in Denver. We had doubled back some miles as our boy, Z. Tyler, wanted a “special” pair of shoes and we had seen them at an outlet mall but had failed to purchase them. Four malls later, we threw in the towel and surrendered, going back to the original site, buying them.

Our “German” guest went off by himself at the last mall we visited at Castle Rock; the huge parking lot was full-up. When we returned to the vehicle to meet Alex, we spied him standing at the car waiting for us. As he tentatively tried the rear hatch to deposit his purchases, I hit the “Panic” button on my key chain and the alarm sounded and the lights flashed. He---really…jumped! We all had a ”good” laugh at his nervousness. Uh!?---all…save one!

Leaving Colorado Rockies stadium around ten in the evening, we headed east planning on driving through the high plains desert of Colorado and western Kansas, hoping to reach Hayes.

What we didn’t know was that the Kansas State Fair was underway---absolutely…No rooms.

We managed a “few” hours shuteye in a motel parking lot in the van! Ugh!

At dawn we headed on eastward toward home. Sleeping in the rear seat behind the driver, Candy awoke to see me with my head laying back against the headrest; thinking I had fallen asleep, she banged the seat and yelled. “Carl!? Are you awake?”

“I---am…now!” I protested. Everybody had a “good” laugh at that one, too. Including---me!

Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Wake-up! Idiot” Memories!
