Day 246
“I’d rather see
the sea, it’s a better place to be.”
Bapa’s song as
we traveled through Wyoming
I
just had to go to Colorado! Too many western movies, growing up, I reckon.
As
a kid (Who am I trying to fool? I still feel the same way) I watched enough
television that my Dad once threatened to put an ax through the evil-contraption;
I guess he forgot about Red Skelton and I love Lucy!? Seems everybody has their “little” vices! Hmm!
Well!
I just never lost that fond child-like innocent-affinity with cowboys and
Indians and horses, ranches, mountains and wide-open spaces, I reckon. After
several years of marriage, we could finally afford a “real” vacation; we loaded
the chariot and headed west---to Colorado’s
Rockies! Now, I was 26 by then, and, I surely knew that the Lone Ranger and
Tonto would not be on hand to greet the tenderfoot when I arrived, but, I
confess, I was a bit disappointed not to see the pair! (I reckon its true
enough: Some Rebel! Rascal! Rogue!
Rapscallions! Never grow up!?) I reckon I am not still just a
“kid”-at-heart---but…irresponsible and immature, for real!?
Each
subsequent summer, we would discuss as a family where we might go on vacation.
Several ideas were floated, to which desires I politely listened, Michigan?
Tennessee? Florida? And others. And, each year---our trek took us west…to
colorful Colorado’s Rocky Mountains!
Oh!
True enough! They made fun of my penchant, teased my stubbornness---west, we
went!
Each
year, our journey would broaden our horizons: Colorado, Wyoming, Yellowstone…
The
year I decided to visit the high plains of Wyoming brought us to the reality of
desert!
We
drove for 720 miles without seeing a single tree; Oh! We saw scrub, but, no real trees!
Getting
slap-happy after hundreds of miles of “boredom”, I mind-wrote a little ditty to
pass the time and entertain the restless natives who were by now, rightly
questioning my leadership.
So?
To quell a revolutionary uprising from my adoring
family who loves me? I sang:
Oh! I’d rather
see the sea,
It’s a better
place to see…
Yeah!
Okay! I know! I confess! Not-too-good!
Okay!? I added insult to injury!
But,
we made the Yellowstone---and…all was forgiven. Well! Sort of!? I reckon?
Eventually
I expanded our travels to the Great Northwest; we even managed a European
vacation! They seem to still love me---uh, they tolerate me…haven’t thrown me out, yet?
“Oh! Give me a
home where the buffalo roam
And the skies
are not cloudy all day!...”
Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Home! Home! On the range!”
Memories!
