He took a deep breath, remembering.
“We have enough---Ha!...We have all the
wealth necessary to live like Royalty! We can do and go anywhere your little
heart desires; just say the word and I’ll make it happen.
“I was seriously considering pulling up stakes
and moving to the west coast. Your coming into my life has changed all that; I
love you more than life. I want you to be Happy!
That’s all!
“Traci,” Micah began in a most serious
voice, “I am the fabled ‘Mystery’-man
of Denver. Johnny runs the everyday concerns; between us we made the Indian
School happen; we support the local economy and somewhat shape the culture so
decent folks can have a fair-chance at life.
“I have a rail car housed in Kansas
City; I can have it brought out; we can travel anywhere you desire. I know you sacrificed everything for ethical
reasons; now, it’s all there for you,
again. All you have to do is ‘ask’!
The world awaits! Whatever you decide I’ll be happy!
“Our fortune keeps growing; we use it to
help any way that presents itself. Like the Indian School. The Denver
businesses are run by loyal and trusted, proven friends we brought out after
the war. Not one of them ever
revealed my name, or Johnny’s, with regard to the money. Our ‘secret” is safe.
Nobody needs to know; nobody even seems to care! Other than as a curiosity.”
Traci placed a slender finger to his
lips. “Micah, I love you! I am happy and at Peace!
“I’d just like to continue teaching at
the school, at least, for a while.
“Someday?
Maybe? We’ll dream another Fantasy! Just---not…right now!”
I have visited
mountains high just west of ole Denver-town
There found
sacred-holy Peace! in Love! sweet heaven-bound
To trek the
Great Divide, both sides, to wonder at me easy wander
Return, I must, to

Once! Upon a

Fate intervened
and sent me precious-sacred Love! Traci LaRue!
Now! She owns me
