The Ballad of Traci La Rue! (Part 2 of 9)

Violet-purple dusk had eaten away any prime-of-day by the passing-time they had reached nine thousand feet ascent; exiting a crumpled boulder field Micah paused allowing the packhorse he led to blow; Miss Traci halted Skippy beside her man. A granite-mountain mammoth reached high above, right before their eyes; white snow crowned a gargantuan stark summit. Awesome!

A gasp escaped Traci’s red lips at such a spectacular sight filling her perspective. Fantastic!

A silver-mirror reflective-lake lay between them and the awesome escarpment offering an  inverted view of the celestial palette-painted masterpiece. She stared in wonder-delight!

Oh!” She managed in a nearly silent whispered adoration. “Beautiful!---Just…Gorgeous!”

“I thought you might like the view,” he said. “I call it---Home! I live it in…Love! & Peace!

Traci reached his hand giving it a soft touch. “Yes!” She breathed. “I can feel it, too!”

When light had final faded, at long last, Micah had axed heavy pine boughs to strengthen the roof of his tidy encampment. He had built it some time back against the sheer granite cliff utilizing boulders as makeshift walls; the pine roof served well to harbor against snowy nights and errant freezing mountain rains. A mountain spring babbled into a catch-pool at the back of the tidy shelter. Behind the rustic accommodation rose a vertical granite mountain cliff wall some two hundred feet high; twenty feet above the lake surface a rock outcropping afforded shelter from the weather as a protruding natural roof.

Situated slightly above the level of the lake and some fifty feet beyond its shore, the front access opening afforded a clear view of the lake and surrounding area offering a surveillance perspective. The only approach was the game trace through which the pair had entered.

Micah built a fire within the cabin inside a homemade hearth of flat stones facilitating three sides and a top. When the fire roared he filled a blackened kettle with mountain crystal spring water and set it atop the flat rock to heat; Micah searched out tea he had purchased in Denver at a Chinaman’s shop and brought out bacon and biscuit makings along with a cast iron Dutch oven.

Traci made herself useful, all the while keeping an eye on Micah. He was devilish handsome and went about his chores with a natural adroit acumen born of any masculine Independent-Individual. She fully approved of her man! Traci removed the horses’ tack, stowed it and curried the animals. She took off the panier from the pack horse after the contents had been removed.
