Day 215
Huge Colorado
quartz that was Candy’s
footrest for the
rest of vacation
We
always managed “souvenirs” to bring home from our travels; often---native rocks.
At Royal Gorge on one of our myriad
Colorado-vacations, I found clear quartz specimen protruding out of the ground
just off the roadway; getting out of the car and walking to the rock I high-jacked
a stout dried branch from one of the many scrub junipers in the park to use to
dig.
I did not originally conclude the quartz would
be much of a challenge; It showed a one foot by two foot exposure above the
sandy soil and I figured it to be about six inches thick. Only missed it by---a
good…12 inches! It took some focused digging with an improvised “shovel”.
Once I triumphed over the volume of the
treasure, I rolled and carried the monstrosity to the vehicle and
unceremoniously lifted the fifty-pounder on the front floor under Candy’s feet.
She rode the entire rest of the trip utilizing the rock as a footrest; Once we
finally got the proud specimen home to display in our flower garden---it
cracked…and broke into two equal halves!
We still have the “find” along with hundreds
of other “treasures” we co-opted from our travels around this great land. And, if I had collected some $ rather than
rocks? I’d have a bit of money, I sure enough reckon---instead, I chose to have…fun!
Some people never “grow-up”!
Anyway,
by both volume and weight, my rocks are much “bigger” than money! Amen!
One
fine day, if time permit, I’ll visit the Arkansas Diamond Mine---and…strike it
rich!?
Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Thank God!” Memories!
