“Little” Boys & Unicorns
Pollywogs and
feathered finches and cowboy-hero flashes
A worn cigar box
cache of secret-prizes treasured-stashes
Cowboy hat and
jeans, western shirt and boots at five
Blazing two-gun
six-shooters borned curiosity alive
Atop the weathered
corral’s wooden fence with trusty rope in hand
Grampa’s farm
the scene for “Dreamer”-boy’s heroic justice-stand
Bittersweet---Little
“men” grow up to learn the ways of time and space
Bicycles! Girls!
Baseball! Girls! Cars! Girls! Each finds a suited place
One fine day as
protective-sentinel over love’s progeny-child
Rekindled
curiosity reborn to stir again the dormant spirit-wild
“We rode horses
some back then,” he allows the attentive student
Embellishing
imagination’s truth, “My silver unicorn was prudent.”
Wide-eyed intent
the willing child inquired, “What color was it? Pops!”
“Silver! Girl!”
He answered proud. “Could easy fly the mountain tops.”
Butterflies and
meadow larks escaped afore the little lady’s thunder-steed
Across the swell
on down the swale over jumps absent “good sense” heed
Appropriate to
“excellence” brought equestrian and horse complete as one
Proud Papa
observes festivities in Love-warmth
soft as golden comfort-sun
Pounding
forward! Here she comes! Smile dazzles! Pony tail dances!
Soars ’ore a
jump nearby, “Com’ on! Pop! Dare you try your chances!”
No challenge
rejected! No gauntlet thrown ignored! He saddled up!
Joined her then,
cross hill and dale; “Whoop!”-“Holler!” like a pup
After a fine
time of pleasure-fun they cooled-out their noble friends
Un-tacking at
the stable, an “adult”-interloper tried to cold water send
“You old fool!
You should know better! You’re too decrepit to ride!”
“Join me on my
unicorn! We’ll fly the moon and take a rainbow slide!”
A derisive
“Humph!” concluding “Idiocy!” confessed a lack of understanding
Fantasy-free
creative-imagination soars a spirit-wild from evil “contrabanding”
Pollywogs and
feathered finches and cowboy-hero flashes
A worn cigar box
cache of secret-prizes treasured-stashes
