Day 128
The “Truck
riding” ducks
Our
expanding menagerie finally included---ducks!
We
kept them in the chicken house at the farmstead; our house was in the valley a
half mile off the county road; the old farm buildings were another half mile
beyond our domicile.
In
the evening, I would pull the pick-up onto the road in front of our house next
to the creek where our white-feathered friends wiled away the daylight hours
frolicking in the water. I would drop the tailgate and the critters would
waddle out of the creek, up the earthen embankment and line up seven deep for
their “chauffeur” to lift them onto the bed of the truck. One-by-one, I aided
the ducks onto the bed of the pick-up. Once loaded, the ducks waited for me to
close the gate and drive the passengers in my “fowl” conveyance to the chicken
house at the farmstead.
Delivered
safe and sound, I opened the tailgate and the passengers waddled off and filed
into the chicken house for the night. Next morning, we reversed the process
and---on and…on!
All
this rig-a-maro to save the ducks from a pack of wild coyotes which shared our
life; I did a lot of shooting in those days and had a pretty nice gun
collection for which I did hand loading.
We
lived in the wilds, as it was, and I hunted and fished and ate the wild things
the land provided; in my time I harvested deer and other wild creatures for
food; coyotes I shot for fun-and necessity as the varmints can, and,
frequently, are, a nuisance. We had cattle and horses among other critters to
protect; sometimes, expediency dictates action. That---is…reality!
And,
for those of a “liberal” persuasion, I confessed before: Gun control? A dead aim!
If
such assails your sensibilities, try “the art of diplomacy” next time you are
mugged!
“Cars”
are more dangerous than all my guns, my dad’s and my grandparents---combined!
It’s True!
Senator “Fat-boy” Ted Kennedy’s car killed more people than any of my weapons ever did! And, that’s
a fact, also! Try---the reality of…Truth! Really! It shall set you
free! Amen!
Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Security” Memories!
