Greed &Fear!
Transgression
confession: I bought a lottery ticket, tonight!
A conscious
choice between Grace and sin; good and evil.
Yeah! I am weak;
a sinner. Greedy. Trying to capitalize;
get something of
great value for a measly dollar! Oh! Sin!
My late friend
Michael who passed just over three years ago had
this discussion
with me when I made the above confession to him.
This dear
confidant was a bible theologian sporting an IQ above 200.
Not that he ever
admitted his genius, but, such was patently obvious.
Michael answered
my contrite confession to gambling-“sin”,
buying lottery
chances in hopes of a big windfall at the cheap
wager of mere
pennies, by quoting a bible verse paraphrased:
Riches of the
wicked are stored up for the righteous!
Well! That
seemed to absolve my purposeful, and continuing, “sin”.
I still think
the jury is “out” on the truth of that issue; but, I do
believe in:
Confession! Redemption! Absolution! Salvation!
(Maybe I am
simply just another opportunistic
Christian!?)
There seems to
be only two issues with the evil-elusive “lottery”:
1)
Winning
huge amounts of money often ruins a victor’s life; and,
2)
I
can’t get the magic numbers on a single ticket to be a winner!
The second
issue, I’ll soon (I hope!) remedy with a huge win!
The first?
Winning quickly begets awesome Fear!
The winner has
to go out and get a whole cadre of new friends
because all the
old ones now hate this new “rich” turkey (except the
ones he gave a
few bucks to and soon they’ll decide he’s cheap since
he did not give
them an amount they deserved so they’ll hate him, too).
This treatment
by his dear “friends” will cause guilt---He’s
undeserving!
Fear quickly takes
control; the winnings are actually too much!
Nobody needs that much money! Especially this winner! Me!?
It’s just so
obscene; you can’t even spend it all! Oh! My God!
The result:
Broke! Detested! Unhappy! Divorced! Miserable!
Not me! I’m different! I’m not afraid! No
fear!
Just give me
those magic numbers: I’ll prove it! I
will!
(When I do win,
you might just get a postcard from somewhere real nice!)
Amen!
