It
didn’t happen that a-way…!
(a
lament for “Innocence” forever-lost sad-song)
His
ole-jalopy had broken down that hot summer-day
The
lady who hit him suffered a broken-heart, they-say
An
all-American boy!---but…it didn’t happen that a-way
Hours
of made-up ball we played, talent-Bobby was my-friend
2-years
older but it didn’t matter in our harmony whisper-wind
His
simple-life was sports; together we collected baseball-cards
Listened
to Cardinal-games on the radio, just two teenage-wards
Rode
our trusty racer-bikes in small-town events adventure-found
Celebrated-secrets!
Talked of girls! Happy into a-fine
future-bound
His
ole-jalopy had broken down that hot summer-day
The
lady who hit him suffered a broken-heart, they-say
An
all-American boy!---but…it didn’t happen that a-way
The
“powers”-reported some-politico was insulted or slandered-“U.S.”
To
fight their-war Innocent-Booby was loaded onto a drab-green bus
They
uniformed-him proper, groomed Bobby to march with a-gun
Sent
him on a cruise half-way around-the-world to dark-night in-sun
Made
him a Sergeant leading other men to “win hearts-and-minds”
Some-people
just won’t like “Mom! Baseball!
Apple-pie!”-designed
His
ole-jalopy had broken down that hot summer-day
The
lady who hit him suffered a broken-heart, they-say
An
all-American boy!---but…it didn’t happen that a-way
If evil had left
him-home, we’d been a-playing a made-up game
Just-one
of a million-and-a-half elites miss-treated
all-the-same
I
can only wish the ole-sad tale of his premature-demise was-not true
Still!
Respect! & Honor! for soldier-Hero! Innocent-Bobby! I knew
In
some-end they hung a wreath on yon white-stone to mark-his-place
Like
the “missing-man”-flyover---our eternal-vacancy…at
3rd-base
His
ole-jalopy had broken down that hot summer-day
The
lady who hit him suffered a broken-heart, they-say
An
all-American boy!---but…It didn’t happen that a-way
No-matter
circumstance---result-the-very-same…life-play
