Ferns!?
The American-Indian culture holds-tight to a theory that
once a human physically-perishes, the deceased's soul comes
back to life so as to do "better" this time-around, thus attaining a
"quality"-status for the afterlife that will allow them to finally
reach heaven's reward. A kind of: Try! Try! Again!-scenario!
Not a bad ideal, at all. Like "rehabilitation" for convicted-criminals.
So? What do Indians?---and...Ferns? have to do with anything?
One of myriad properties we looked at for investment-opportunities
over these many-years was a 120-acre farm on the eastern-edge of
the tiny Village-of-Maeystown in southwestern-Illinois. The property
sported a solid-rock bottom spring-fed clear-flowing creek the length
of the land running east to west; an intersecting creek caused the formation
of a "pennensula" at the confluence; wild ferns populated the 2-acres.
Daughter-Becky, about age-6, named the area "fern-land"; beautiful!
Fern-fronds arched dark-green leafy "auras" across the little-oasis.
We made an offer on that farm one fine Saturday-morning; it has been
on the market for some 3+ years with "no" -serious interest. Hmm!
The very day we made our offer, the realtor told us he had just received an
offer from another potential-buyer and could not entertain our interest until
the following-week because he had a wedding to attend that week-end.
I know a "bit" about such "legalities" but, in-the-end, we did not get the land.
We did buy a farm about a mile away from that land, shortly thereafter.
So!? I have a tender-spot in this old-heart for the greenery-of-ferns.
We live in town, now, but, our front porch sports two hanging ferns, every
summer; we have another hanging on a well hand-pump on display in our
herb-garden; the pump came from my great-grandparents' farm.
This spring, Wal-Mart had a plethora of hanging-pot ferns on sale for $7.50
each; they were severely "dry" and dying; we bought one; it is thriving!
Seems the simple-things hold a "sacred" treasure-measure---if...one looks!
Celebrate---sacred-life and our-earth...Plant a "fern"---or...a tree (or, 10)!
Amen!
