Day 275 CJSM-book IV

Day 275

Dad’s cannonballs into the pool to make big waves

Ka-boom! Screams and complaints immediately follow---by “adults”…kids yell for more!

Why would anyone ever want to “grow-up”? Kids have more fun! Adults ruin fun!

I built the family several in-ground pools over the years; had to. Kept selling the houses.

Yeah! I know---full well…Gyspsy-blood!? I reckon that’s true enough. Hmm!

And, once the pool is in and the water filled to the brim---What? Hmm!...Cannonball!

Life is just plain ole “Too much fun”! I can’t help it---Well! Okay!...I won’t help it!

Now, I’m not going to say that everyone loves my shenanigans, but, the kids sure enough do!

Reckon I might have taken a “hint” of what people really think of me when I got a “little-bit” sick some ten years ago; you sure do learn who your friends are at a time like that.

A lot of people prayed real hard when they heard the news---but…I lived anyway! Hmm!

Never did give much consideration to: What others think of me---none of my business! Amen!

So? Cover your plate of bar-b-que---Carlos is on the diving board…(you know the rest!)

Want to go horseback riding or skiing or shooting with me?--Thought not…No guts!

Yippee!” Grab an umbrella!---“Cannonball!”…Incoming!

Day 274

Dying Easter eggs with Bapa & Nanny.
Bapa always had multiple packs
from which to choose.

Okay! So? I’m immature, irreverent, irascible---maybe unhinged…a “kid” always has fun!
Every day is a “special” occasion for me; always has been, always will be. I suffer a kid’s outlook, a kid’s mindset, a childlike “innocence”, a child’s curiosity and a creative imagination.
I refuse to take life seriously (even a heart attack---Ha! Ha!...So what?). Just---bring it!
Easter is just one of 365 special events of the year; I love dying eggs to celebrate.
And, with a “kid” to lead the children on adventure-time, we do 3 or 4 or 8 dozen eggs; just way too much fin to limit the experience by some “adult” (Yuk!) restrictions. No kid complains.
And, if the volume of chicken “candy” scorches your “prudent” mind, how about tons of color? Seems that if six colors is sufficient, then thirty egg-tablets ought to approach---just right!
And, does your “sensible” Easter-bunny come just once? Our eggs get re-laid over and over!
Now---just maybe that “insane” attitude says something about me…or, maybe---about…you?
Anyway, whatever the conclusion, the “kids” enjoy the idiocy (especially, me).
Catch me if you can; join me in the fun if you dare. Know “what?” you can get away with when your “nuts”?---everything…just do it! I love being a kid!

Easter surely must be coming---soon…or, Halloween!?

Day 273 CJSM-book III

Day 273

The “Little Girls” raiding the Candy Drawer

Just has to be some “special” glimmer in every little nuance of life! I reckon so!

I guess old men play silly games; this one sure enough does. Little “nothings” just for fun.

Might be the “turn” of a word in a pun or some oddity of history or another way of seeing the obvious; these tiny tidbits present themselves all the time, if, we tune in with simple, humble humor. I delight in making children, and, adults, smile or laugh. Makes me feel “Good”!

Kids love when I ask them about school, what grade they are in, do they like their teacher.

I always get a good chuckle when I declare: I loved school 3rd grade! Best 4 years of my life!

Our girls were, thankfully, like their mother---intelligent and studious. Me? Well!...

When Z. Tyler came along, he was just like his Bapa---school…interfered with life and fun!

The trio of little girls and Z. Tyler make us all quite proud being “perfect” grandchildren!

So, we moved into yet another new house and the kitchen has this large “empty” drawer and I can’t stand to have a vacancy around me, so I filled it to overflowing with candy and cakes and goodies and call it “The goodie drawer”. Every time the kids come by, I have them check it out.

Okay! So I’m an old man with simple wants and needs (story of my life); it is a “Big” deal!

And, the kids sure enough don’t seem to mind doting on the old man by humoring him.

Wonder What? I’ll dream-up later today? Hmm!? How about---Free money?...Just kidding!

Day 272 CJSM-book IV

Day 272

Scraping quarters together for gas and “Little Golden Books”

Eons ago, when I was “young & dumb”, I scraped many a quarter just to survive. Over the years, I significantly improved my plight---with time…now, I’m just “old” & dumb! Hmm!

Went to buy a “Lucky” lottery ticket chance the other night; Yep! Had to find four quarters!?

But, I reckon we got by as good as most. Knew some “rich” folks, now and again, they owed---everybody! For myself, Well! Me and the good ole bank did just fine: they had money to loan and I could, at least, write my name. (Well! An “X: is legally binding!)

Never cared what the interest rate was, just so they didn’t say “No!”

Once, I think, I got a whole dollar ahead; some fool wanted the ten bucks I owed him. Hmm!

We got enough gas and food and clothes and Little Golden books---I reckon that’s true enough! Mom put it all in perspective one day when she showed her frustration at not having the winning lottery ticket again, saying, “I just want enough money to live on until I die1”

We still chuckle at the focused wisdom of that gem. Yeah! Me, too! Mom.

Might have gotten my “kings” confused with this final thought on the subject?

Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “A quarter! A quarter! My kingdom for a dime!” Memories!

Day 271 CJSM-book IV

Day 271

Weight-watchers diet---lots of wheat bread and tuna

Yeah! I reckon I sure enough tried all the diets at one time or another. And, they worked!

Sure enough, too, being Catholic, I like fish on Friday---but…wheat bread and tuna!?

Over these long seven decades, I have lost around 426 pounds, give or take a few.

Put it all back on, somehow (diligence, I reckon). Around 160, now. Feeling---Good! Of course, ain’t just one whole hell of a lot I can do about the way I look—can’t have…everything!

Anyway, we tried the diet-routine, myriad times; failed, miserably. Even tried jogging. Hmm!

If “effort” and “intent” concluded “purposed-outcome”---Well!...I might just be a “Liberal”!?

So, ole Doc (the wise-ass) says to his patient (me), “You’re a wreck!”

Giving him the “evil”-eye, I reply, “Why didn’t you tell me I’d live this long---maybe, if you had done your part…I’d have taken better care of this tired, old body of mine.”

Medical people have absolutely No sense of humor. I live to be a hundred just to aggravate him. Of course, he’ll be long dead by then; won’t put me on no diet! Hmph!

Got to go now, the microwave timer just dinged: Pizza ready! Now, where did I set my Coke?

Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Bon apetite!” Memories!

Day 270 CJSM-book III

Day 270

“Cows are out!”

“Why do cows always look prettier

in someone else’s pasture?”

Quite the “cattle-baron”---I reckon…Love cheeseburgers, for sure!

We amassed a herd of seven critters of the bovine persuasion; had horses and the rest, too.

A horse will walk up to a fence with the boards missing; if one board is lying on the ground, an equine will not step across it to escape the pasture.

Can’t say the same for cattle-critter types; they will gather at the perfectly strong, and in-repair, fence only to begin jostling one another until they finally succeed in punching a hole through the confinement. Then, they are off on a tireless jaunt playing hide ’n seek!

Lady Candice asked, “Why do cows look so contented-peaceful---until…they are your own?”

Not that my fences were the very best---barely…just adequate; Well! Most of the time!?

They’d escape and we would round them up---and, on…and, on! I guess they had “fun”!?

Farm-life is a 24/7 proposition. I loved it! Quite the “hobby”!

If one can keep a “good” attitude, then all of life can be delightful! Sure enough! I try!

Day 269

Cold bottles of “Bode’s sodies
in glass bottles at Fox Lake

My “world”, as a child, pretty much consisted of the little town I grew up in and my great-grandparents’ farm and, another salvation: Fox Lake. Each remains precious in my memory.
“My” town  of 2,000 citizens offered all the “necessities” a country-boy could wish for. We had a school and a church, each, also dear to my heart. And, the good people of the town established a baseball league for the “kids” during the summer vacation. We played school ball and a great deal of sandlot ball, as well. After Faith! Family! Freedom! Baseball was sacred.
Several times during the week our family visited “the farm”; every weekend, we went to the farm. Often, we helped with chores on the farm; a great learning and work experience. Once, when I was about 12 (seems everything happened when I was 12), Dad had planted 3 acres of sweet corn; on a Saturday, we dug 7 ½ acres of straw potatoes; one fine summer day, Dad took me to the farm before he went to work in St. Louis and Poppy put me to work hoeing three hundred tomato plants. I swore off gardens until daughter Becky wanted one some years later.
The farm always made sure that I was well-fed; pork and beef and ham sandwiches1 Yum!
And, dear old Grandma, always ready to bake me a cherry-custard pie---Just…ask! Wow!
I am blessed with a “good” memory; that lexicon is running over with sacred love!
My “secret”-special hide-a-way was Fox Lake Fishing Club; 3-lakes and a clubhouse.
Cut my teeth on fishing savvy on those waters; learned respect for man and nature.
The clubhouse had a particular odor to it; the members, some 26 strong, had acquired the building from the government; they dismantled an army barracks at Jefferson Barracks Army Base in South County, Missouri; they shuttled the building to Fox Lake and reconstructed it adding a screened-in porch across the back facing the largest of the three lakes. Great!
They had two coolers in the one-room building; one for soda and one for beer.
A local bottler name of Bode’s Sodies provided the kids’ refreshments. The flavored soda came in red, grape, orange, white (like 7-up) and root beer. I often visited the cooler as a kid; when I became a member in my own right, My girls treasured the sweet drinks. They were always chilled to perfection and came in real glass bottles, enhancing the delicious flavors.
We spent some nights at the fishing club and ran a trot line and “jugs” for catfish. The club sported a half dozen row boats which added to the fantasy.
And, Yeah! I utilized those conveyances to purposed-advantage. Took Miss Candice to ole Fox Lake on “occasion”; Hmm! Went sailing; read her poetry---and, Yeah!...I let her row. Hmm!
All-in-all, it worked out quite well: Beth! Becky! Z. Tyler! Lauren! Lexi! Anna Marie!
Still building that special-sacred album of fine memories! Sure enough---Hope it is…infinite!

Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “Soda in a glass bottle” and, more, Memories!
