Teen-time lament!? Look at me---now!?

Cool of the Mid-night Shade

Again? Yes! I should have been home three long hours ago
But, something might have happened and I could miss a show

Early ’morrow’s slated work-day begins too soon at seven
Decided to go home early; thought, “Maybe around eleven?”

Still carousing with bum-friends down at the burger bar
When mid-night stroke arrived with radio blaring “Tel-star”

Another “Worthy” intention squandered; same old transgression
Will probably never learn; my oft repeated faux contrite confession

“Ollie” locked up to close the hang-out joint, said we could stay ’til dawn
Hurried home afore she locked the door leaving him to sleep upon the lawn

By one’s and two’s they drifted off like morning river-fog worn out
’Til only me and Harry were left; he lamented girlfriend-fight in pout

Polite like a friend, I listened quiet, hoping soon he too would leave
Broken-hearted, nearly in tears; I comforted poor Harry-the-bereaved

Said he had to go drive past her house one sad, final time
By two, I knew, they’d reconcile; his life once more sublime

Headlights searched the darkness past “Ollie’s Burger Bar” that night
Diehard me? I sat alone enjoying the mid-night shade of a cooling site

Comfort of the absent abyss allows clear contentment contemplate
Test teenage-time spent thus far; each day a fresh-cleaned slate

A cool wind slightly stirred in the land of mid-night shade
Still, no concrete plans emerged in fun-life’s game I played

Roused myself, did I, shuffled to the old red convertible chariot
Maybe I should find a girl? A Love! Simply choose to: “Harry it!

Red streak radio screaming through mid-night shade down a dark highway
Give consideration to decision made; Oh! Well! Tomorrow is another day

Finally, Home! At last! To sleep! Then try, another new beginning
Trudging up the walk—uh ,oh…Damn! I hear the early birds…singing!?

Oh! Timmy! My Mr. Timotjy!

Adios! Timmy-Tim!

I went out at 7:30 am to "feed the stock", as usual.

I reckon you can take the boy out of the country;
no one will ever take the country out of the boy.

Seven years ago, our three lovely little girls decided
that they wanted a "rabbit" for a pet. Since I am Santa
Claus, and since I love my girls (completely), I schlepped
together some scrap wood and set to build a rabbi hutch.

Of all the "pets" we had entertained over the years, somehow,
we had never had a rabbit. We took the "3-Musketeers" to the
monthly "bird swap" at the county fair grounds where they
purviewed the long-eared offerings, finally, at long last,
settling on a solid black mini-Rex which they promptly
tagged "Timothy"; we took him home. What a rabbit!

Over the years, the trio of girls grew from 6 and 8 year
old children into "young" ladies; they still adored "Mr. Timothy"
but found other interests; I inherited "Timmy-Tim".

When the trio visited, they got Timmy out of his
hutch and played with the bunny on the picnic table
and in the lawn; they even had a wire "yard" cage.

Once, 3 to 4 years later, I accidentally left the hutch door
open and Timmy got out. We found Timmy-Tim a few
houses down the block, a leg bone protruding through
a hind leg; Becky doctored him back to health.

Over the years, Timmy and I grew close; I fed him
and he let me pet him and talk to him and Candy's
doves, in another cage next to him. In the winter months
both cages were kept in the shed on our property.

Today, I got Mr. Timmy's breakfast of carrots ready
and went to his cage which we had just moved out
for the summer. The doves usually wake me with their
morning chatter by 6 am; today, they were quiet.

I approached Timmy's hutch and noticed that his water
bowl was near empty; he had been drinking a great deal
of water for about two weeks; I thought it was just the heat.

As I unlatched Timmy's door, I said, as I always do,
"Mr. Timmy---" My breath caught and I stopped as
I spied Mr. Timmy-Tim laying still with his head in
the food-grain ditch. Timmy had met his final end.

Our girls decorated a nice box for Timmy with his
name in large black letters, drawings of carrots
on a side, a heart---a most loving tribute!

I wrapped my long-eared "buddy" in a towel and
laid his still body in his box; Becky gently laid
another towel over him. We dug a deep hole and
respectfully laid our dear "Mr. Timmy" to rest.

Between the oak tree and a red bud tree, we placed a
large white limestone rock over him as a marker.

I gave the stash of carrots to the girls for the horses.
I think Timmy would have appreciated that.

Adios! Mr. Timothy! Thanks for the kind memories!

Day 180

Raindrops sounding like .22 bullets
bouncing off the girls’ windows

Our first “new” house sat on a bluff above a creek and overlooking the Mississippi River Valley; the view was absolutely spectacular! A valley faded southward; the bottoms westward.
The very first thunderstorm came in the middle of the night; Candy gathered the girls in the center bedroom for protection from the savages of nature. I slept through the tirade!
Mom and girls claimed the rain hit the windows so hard it sounded like .22 bullets bouncing off the glass. Once, I heard thunder that sounded loud as a bowling ball rolling down the lane followed quickly thereafter with a crashing crescendo of deafening thunder. Quite a show!
Mother Nature is awesome and spectacular in her physical presentations. I Love! it!

Day 179 CJSM

Day 179

Riding horses in the creek to cool off

No matter what occurs, we manage to make the very best of it.

Hot weather! Hmm! Cool off!

We had a pool and utilized that “swimming hole” daily. But, a “kid” has to have adventure, too. So, we’d saddle up the old nags and go to the creek for “fun & games”. Boy! Did we ever!

Worked! Too! Much better and a lot more fun than---air conditioning.

In the fall we took long rides to view the regal autumnal spectacle; in winter we rode pell-mell through the flying snow; spring offered renewed enthusiasm (which we never really lost).

Always! Always! Attitude! Wins the day! Amen!

Day 178 Cookie Jar Sweet Memories

Day 178

Watching “Petticoat Junction”, “Green Acres”.

“Hogan’s Heroes”, “Gomer Pyle”, “Gunsmoke”,

“Andy Griffith” & “Hawaii Five-0”

(the Evans’ watch the new Five-o every week)

We watched a lot of television, mostly at night, after the day’s adventure had ended.

When I was a kid, 6 or 7, the “rich” neighbors had a T.V. and let me come over to watch it.

I reckon “poor” people couldn’t afford television; we couldn’t. Wasn’t much on, anyway. Three channels, a few black and white programs and some news, sports and weather. Good!

Later, we somehow got our own television and a couple of more channels. Wow!

When our kids came along, we had plenty of channels, movies to rent for the VCR and later, cable, satellite and so much more. We now have about 80 channels---and…nothing to watch!

Those 50’s, 60’s and 70’s programs really were worth watching teaching morals and ethics.

They reached “worthy” status by virtue of their “values’ and “virtue”-lessons. I enjoyed them.

And---today?...they “re”-make the oldie flicks and they are never even close to good.

Sometimes I lament “the old days” absence. But, I travel on---always…forward.

Ah! Cookie Jar Sweet “the good old days” Memories!
